Hornbook Sampler
In the days prior to
schoolbooks, alphabets and other instructional materials had to be written out
and passed around from student to student in the classroom. A small wooden
paddle was used, made so papers could be tacked down. A transparent sheet
of cow horn was placed over the paper to better protect it, and the paddle
eventually became known as a hornbook.
Our hornbook sampler is stitched on 36 count Sparrow from Birds of a Feather
using Needlepoint Silk. The stitch count is 65 wide by 135 high.
The wonderful hornbook frame is available from Primitive Traditions.
